TV Feature Wall with Storage: How to Build a Wall That Works Harder

A TV on a wall is a start. A TV wall with built-in storage is a solution. The best TV feature walls do more than frame your screen — they eliminate the side tables, hide the cable boxes, conceal the cords, and give your living room a fully resolved, designed-from-scratch look.

At Featurewall.au, some of our most requested projects combine a TV feature wall with custom storage — shelves, cabinets, console units, or a combination of all three. Here’s how these designs work and how to plan one for your home.

Types of Storage You Can Integrate Into a TV Feature Wall

1. Floating Shelves

Floating shelves are the most popular storage addition to a TV feature wall. They create visual symmetry on either side of the TV, provide a home for speakers, streaming devices, and decorative objects, and add depth to the wall without the visual weight of closed cabinetry.

The key to great floating shelves is proportion. They should be in scale with the TV and each other — not too deep, not too shallow — and spaced so the wall doesn’t feel cluttered even when fully styled.

2. Recessed Niches

A recessed niche is built directly into the wall cavity — a defined zone, often lit from within, that can house media equipment, display objects, or decorative pieces. Niches add depth and architecture to a feature wall and work beautifully in modern and contemporary homes.

For a TV feature wall, a recessed niche below the screen is a clean way to house your console without a freestanding unit taking up floor space.

3. Integrated TV Units & Consoles

A built-in TV unit — custom-manufactured to suit your wall dimensions — is the gold standard of TV wall storage. It eliminates the awkward gap between a freestanding unit and the wall, conceals all cabling, and allows for dedicated zones for every device, disc collection, and remote control. Featurewall.au designs and installs custom TV units as part of our feature wall builds, made to measure and finished to match.

4. Full-Height Joinery with TV Integration

The most premium option: floor-to-ceiling joinery that incorporates the TV, storage, display niches, and sometimes even a bar or study zone. This transforms the entire wall into a bespoke interior piece. This type of installation is increasingly popular in high-end Sydney renovations and new builds where the living room is the centrepiece of the home’s social life.

Designing Storage Around Your TV

There are two approaches: storage-led design and TV-led design.

In a storage-led design, you start with what you need to store, determine how much cabinet and shelf space that requires, and then position the TV within that layout. This suits homes with a lot of media equipment, book collections, or display pieces.

In a TV-led design, the TV position is fixed first — at the correct viewing height — and storage is designed around it. This suits minimal homes where the TV wall is primarily decorative and storage is secondary.

Neither approach is wrong. Featurewall.au will guide you through the decision during your design consultation.

Cable Management in a TV Storage Wall

One of the biggest advantages of a built-in TV wall is cable management. When the wall is purpose-built, every power point, HDMI cable, and data connection can be routed through the wall itself — meaning no visible cables, no cable ties, no raceways stuck to the surface.

This requires coordination with an electrician during the build phase, which Featurewall.au manages on your behalf. The result: a TV wall that looks like it belongs in a magazine.

Materials for TV Storage Walls

  • Painted MDF — versatile, paintable in any colour, excellent for built-in joinery at a mid-range price point.
  • Timber veneer — warm natural look with the dimensional stability of engineered construction.
  • Lacquered cabinetry — ultra-smooth, available in any colour, very durable surface.
  • Feature material panelling — stone, plaster, or timber slats used on the surround wall with cabinetry below.
  • Combination builds — mixing materials for contrast, e.g. timber shelves with a plaster TV surround.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the existing wall construction. Some walls can have shelves or niches added with relatively minor work. Others — particularly solid masonry or tiled walls — require more significant intervention. We're happy to assess your existing wall and advise on the best approach.

For a console unit below the TV, 350–450mm deep is standard. This accommodates most soundbars, cable boxes, and streaming devices. Shallower floating shelves (150–200mm) are used for decorative display and smaller devices.

At Featurewall.au, we handle both the feature wall and the built-in joinery as a single project. You deal with one team, one quote, and one installation. No need to coordinate separately between trades.
